Supported Employment and Training
“Far and away the
best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at
work worth doing.” (Theodore Roosevelt)
Our
employment training and support services empower individuals
with disabilities to lead more meaningful, dignified and
productive lives in their communities through successful
employment.
The Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission
(MRC) and the Department of Mental Retardation
(DMR) provide funding for individuals with disabilities
who require training, support, job coaching and job placement
services. These agencies have selected Lifeworks as a qualified
provider of job development services.
Our Supported Employment Programs
include 4 types of employment models. Individuals participate
according to their own preferences, needs, and skill levels:
1) Competitive Community Employment
This model supports each individual with a job search
tailored to his/her own skill levels, preferences and
work experience.
Our Job Developer works closely with local employers
to uncover or create new employment opportunities in the
community.
Individuals are referred to and placed in part-time positions
that match their own skill levels and career goals.
The process begins with a planning meeting between our
Job Developer, the individual, the job coach, and perhaps
his/her family members or guardians.
Personalized resumes and introduction letters are created,
based on individual experience and skill levels.
We
work closely with each person throughout the placement
process, which includes the initial search and referral
phase, the submission of applications, scheduling and
completion of interviews, and the successful negotiation
of salary and work schedules.
Each individual is supported by a Job Coach during the
initial weeks of employment to ensure that all tasks are
completed correctly according to job descriptions and
employer expectations.
Many of our individuals have retained their jobs for
years, earning rewards, raises and promotions from their
employers.
Our excellent retention rate of 87% in fiscal year 2005
is a testimony to our careful and personalized job placement
procedures.

This model provides permanent employment for a group
of individuals who work for a specific company on a regular
basis, up to five days each week.
A Job Coach is present at all times to supervise and
ensure that tasks are completed according to the employer’s
specifications.
The tasks as outlined by the employer typically remain
relatively constant as does the composition of the enclave
the group.
This model allows our staff to assess individual skill
levels future job development, and gives the individuals
a chance to experience and determine their job task preferences
and overall comfort in the workplace.
This
model provides a similar employment arrangement as an
Enclave, except that it may be on a temporary, seasonal,
or on-call basis. This can be one-time only, or a recurring
agreement with a local company.
A Job Coach is present at all times to supervise and
ensure that assignments, tasks and projects are completed
according to the employer’s specifications.
Different individuals will be selected to participate
in the mobile crew by the Job Coaches and Program Directors.
Individuals are paid on either an hourly or production
basis, depending on the employer.
This model allows our staff to assess individual skill
levels future job development, and gives the individuals
a chance to experience and determine their job task preferences
and overall comfort in the workplace.
4) Supported Employment Centers
Lifeworks
Supported Employment Centers are located in Norwood and
West Roxbury.
At both Centers individuals have the opportunity to get
paid for sub-contracting work, where they receive direct
supervision and training.
Job Coaches supervise groups of individuals who may be
working on a variety of projects for different businesses,
including assembly, packaging, and mail fulfillment.
Working at an Supported Employment
Center allows each individual to maintain and upgrade
his/her own skills in preparation for their next career
step, if appropriate for their unique competencies: participating
in a mobile work crew, joining an enclave, or seeking
competitive employment.
Employment Readiness Training
Through
a variety of job readiness trainings Lifeworks prepares
individuals of all ages for community based employment and
the environment and expectations that come along with the
opportunity.
Lifeworks offers unique training and support
programs for students transitioning from “School
to Work”. We provide job readiness assessments,
training, counseling, coaching and eligibility planning.
These programs and services are coordinated for each individual
by their families, schools, and Lifeworks.
At Lifeworks, individuals may take part in
our 9 session “World of Work”
classes which are scheduled throughout the year. Each person
participates according to their own job readiness level
and personal employment goals. The curriculum addresses
many different aspects of community employment, such as:
what the Job Developer does for you during a job search,
what is expected of the individual during this time, effective
job search tools, interviewing skills, self-advocacy, improving
interpersonal communication, and the “10 Golden Rules”
of the workplace regarding appropriate behavior, dress codes,
etc.
